Compiled Lesson 1 and 2
Lesson 1:
Image 1: (Question 1)
(a) A mechanism that would be able to help result in the oscillating motion would be a cam.
(b) Explanation of the sketch : The cam is actually attached to the wheels of the toy, so when the toy is being tugged along, naturally, the cam would rotate, thus resulting in the oscillating motion of the duck.
Image 2: (Question 2)
Explanation : A simple hinge joint where half of the joint is blocked, thus resulting in the 'lock' and enabling the table to stand without collapsing, but yet at the same time, foldable in a certain direction.
Lesson 2:
Part 1:
Real life applications of mechanisms...
Image 3: This device is one of the elderly-friendly workout machines, found almost in any park in Singapore, which is based on the concept of linkages.
Image 4: A similar device with the same concept, which is also based on linkages.
Image 5: Gears can be found in bicycles.
Image 6: Gears can also be found being used in pencil sharpeners
Part 2:
A Problem Identified:
In a clothes cupboard, clothes usually take up a lot of space if you do not compress them (with reference to image 7) , usually by more than half the amount of space. In order to save the space, you will have to use a lot of strength, which will be troublesome and annoying, especially for the elderly. With reference to image 8, here is the same clothes cupboard, with the same amount of clothes, but compressed...
A Solution: (Refer to image 9)
I have identified a solution, which is extremely simple, and requires the usage of mechanisms. It is a lever by the side of the cupboard, and when you rotate it, it will actually activate a few other mechanisms, which will help to compress the clothes into a corner. But the downsides of this solution is, it might actually require more space at the side of the cupboard to be installed. So I am thought it would be fine if the mechanism is only allowed to reach at the most half of the cupboard, in order to save the space of installing the mechanism.
